The festival, established at least as far back as 1847, is celebrated on the first Tuesday in the month of July every year. The festival is used to mark the beginning of the fishing season in Elmina. Nana Kobina Gyan I, Early life
Nana Kobina Gyan I was born in Anomansa on 13 February 1821 to Nana Kobina Conduah I, who was king of Anomansa from 1863-1869. During his father's reign, Kobina Gyan was sub-king (ohin nadir ekyen) and acted as a prominent spokesperson for the Anomansa community. When the enforcement of the 1867 Anglo-Dutch Convention for an Interchange of Territory on the Gold Coast resulted in a siege of Elmina by the Fante Confederacy, Nana Kobina Gyan co-authored the August 1868 petition to King William III of the Netherlands, asking him for help and assistance.
Kobina Gyan learnt early the price to pay for not going by the choice of the people when his father Nana Kobina Conduah I was destooled in January 1869 for not opposing the Dutch governor George Pieter Willem Boers's way of dealing with the siege of Elmina in March 1868 strongly enough, Kobina Gyan was enstooled as King of Anomansa by the stool name of Nana Kobina Gyan I on 15 July 1869 thus succeeding his father.
The next four years of his life would be plagued with events and challenges which would make his reign and name indelible in the history of Anomansa.
